THE FEEL

In many ways, the term “eclectic mix” fits Maplewood. Its homes are a mix of classical housing styles, including older Victorians and "gingerbread" brick bungalows, and more modern condos and townhomes. Its school district prides itself on diversity and social responsibility. And its commercial district features a variety of independent shops and restaurants.

HISTORY

The story of Maplewood is a story of good old American entrepreneurship. Much of present-day Maplewood was part of a land grant to Charles Gratiot, a Swiss merchant who made a name for himself in the area. Well after his death, the town that had grown around his estate became home to the Sutton brothers, a pair of blacksmiths who first sold settlers on the idea of iron nails and locks for doors. In many ways, modern Maplewood has the same entrepreneurial spirit, with many new and independent shops and restaurants sprouting in the area.

ACCESSIBILITY

Maplewood has direct access to highways 64/40 and 44, providing quick access to the St. Louis City and much of the county. Main streets Hanley Road/Laclede Station and Big Bend intersect Manchester Avenue within Maplewood.

CULTURE

Maplewood loves an excuse to get together. Annual events include the Sweet Tooth Tour and the Coffee Crawl (to show off local vendors of each, respectively), Taste of Maplewood, the Christmas Tree Walk, Let Them Eat Art, and Small Business Saturday. The Schlafly’s farmer’s market is also worth checking out.

ENTERTAINMENT

The website for the city of Maplewood includes the motto “Shop Dine Bowl!” encouraging visitors to try the best of Maplewood. Besides a great mix of restaurants and shops around the area of Manchester Road, there are a number of places to try your hand at billiards, pinball, bowling, and more. In fact, Maplewood is home to the historic Saratoga Lanes, a second-story bowling alley touted as the “Oldest Bowling Alley in Continuous Operation West of the Mississippi”—and with all the vintage charm that phrase conjures.

SCHOOLS

The Maplewood Richmond Heights school district is one of the oldest school districts in the county, but don’t be fooled: it’s as progressive and modern as can be. Schools are proud to highlight a low student/teacher ratio, a farm-to-table cafeteria program, home visits for students and families, and more.
